leo bieneman

filmmaker • sound designer • composer

Leo is a Sydney-based filmmaker, composer and sound designer. He composes both electronic and orchestral music for short film, theatre and performance art, and has worked in collaboration with some of Australia’s emerging talent.

He is inspired to create music by its power to support and intensify moving image. Influenced by composers such as Thomas Newman, Zbigniew Preisner, Jürgen Knieper, Alexandre Desplat and Max Richter, Leo has a particular affection for creating music and sound designs that employ minimalism, dissonance and make use of negative space to awaken the melancholy in us all and transport us to a zone of reflection within the depths of ourselves.

His music and sound design has featured in several short films: ‘I Love Umbrellas’ (2005), ‘Eyes of Life’ (2011) and ‘Bingo’ (2013). He also composed the music for performances of the Les Winspear play ‘The Lizard of Oz’. One of his compositions was also performed by Springwood Orchestra and was later used to accompany a piece of performance art. Most recently, he has been producing music for experimental moving image works. He is also working on two podcasts: ‘Stamped on Arrival’ and ‘The Leo and the Loz’ for which he is doing sound and music.
